Woodward Hall Science and Technology Building

University of North Carolina at Charlotte

A major science department, computer and engineering departments, classrooms, administrative offices and auditorium comprise the new science and technology building at UNC Charlotte. The design team for the $34-million, 220,000 SF Woodward Hall Science and Technology included included Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott, McCracken & Lopez, PA, and Research Facilities Design.

One of the challenges for this project was to develop a building that includes state-of-the-art engineering systems for both undergraduate education and complex graduate research.

The biology department occupies 45,000 SF, with 10,000 SF of support and administrative space and 35,000 SF of lab space. Included is a 5,400 SF vivarium to house mice and small animals. The computer-related departments occupy 35,000 SF in the dry wing and include Information Operation Management, Computer Science and Information Technology, and Electrical Engineering. The building contains six 60-seat classrooms, seven 30-seat classrooms, a 300-seat auditorium, and a 58-seat distance learning classroom.

“We asked the Pease–SBRA design team to combine a high quality design concept with an extremely technical and multifaceted laboratory function. They have effectively designed a facility of elegance, complexity, efficiency and functionality.”
