Central Prison

North Carolina Department of Correction

After 30 years of service and construction costs that, to date, total over $250 million, Pease continues to provide planning and design services for the 52-acre maximum-security Central Prison. This includes site development for the prison's largest project, the $152-million, 18-acre Regional Medical Center Complex currently under construction.

From the redesign of the original prison, housing 1,200 resident inmates and 400 staff members, to the site development for the Regional Medical Center Complex — this work has spurred the development of essentially a small city. This development includes the following:

  • 10-year Master Plan
  • Death Row Housing
  • Regional Diagnostic Center
  • Maximum Security Housing
  • Administrative Offices
  • Industrial Operations
  • Regional Medical Center Complex
  • Central Utility Plants and Distribution Systems

Pease has managed the redevelopment of Central Prison for decades, involving several national design firms and over 25 consulting firms.

The Master Plan has been updated and adjusted for projected new growth every 10 years, as required by the demands on the facility.
