Asheville Federal Complex

General Services Administration

Located at the fringe of the Central Business District, on Asheville's Gateway Corridor, the federal complex accomplishes a dual purpose. A sophisticated office building provides a national identity for numerous federal agencies, while a landmark plaza combines the new office building with the historic courthouse, providing a public plaza and terraced parking areas.

Pease provided master planning, programming and design for the complex. Partnering with federal agencies, city and county departments, historic groups, the Atlanta and Washington offices of the GSA, and the U.S. Marshals Service—the firm developed an extensive master plan and efficient program.

The 6-story, 265,000 SF federal office building houses major tenants such as the National Climatic Data Center and USAF Air Weather Service. The building design complements the facade and character of the federal courthouse.

The $6-million courthouse program involved extensive renovations to the courtrooms and administrative facilities. All mechanical, electrical, security, fire safety and telecommunication systems were replaced. A new central plant serves both the office building and courthouse. Successfully addressing the challenges of this renovation, the team placed careful attention in preserving the historic elements of the 1930s courthouse.
